The Best Air Mattress for Long-Term Use

There are many advantages to using an air mattress for long-term use including ease of storage, cost, and the benefit of adjusting the firmness to your liking. Air mattresses have become a very popular option for those seeking relief from back pain due to the fact you can set the firmness level of most air mattresses quite easily.

Below, we have listed some of the most popular air mattresses on the market, and all of the below mentioned models are available in multiple sizes to suit everyone’s needs. Take your time, and select one that suits your requirements for both size as well as comfort.

Fox Air Beds Plush High Rise Premium Inflatable Air Mattress

Fox Air Beds Plush High Rise Inflatable Air Mattress with Premium Gel Memory Foam Mattress...
View on Amazon

This inflatable mattress from Fox Air Beds is more than just an air mattress. It comes with pillow-shaped air chambers on the top, and is built from a really tough layer of premium quality vinyl. The vinyl layer used in the body of this mattress is 43% thicker than the vinyl in an average air mattress, making this Fox Air inflatable mattress extremely tough and durable. It even features a built-in two way inflatable pump so that you can decrease as well as increase the air pressure inside this mattress with the push of a button.

The pillow chambers as well as the surface are topped with memory foam, and this memory foam layer is nearly 2” thick. In fact, if you cover this mattress up with bed sheets, you might actually be fooled into thinking that it is a regular bed with spring cushions. However, it is actually one of the most comfortable air mattresses on the market and is extremely easy to inflate or deflate. You can buy more expensive mattresses than this one, but the difference in comfort and build quality will be extremely negligible.

This is about as durable and comfortable as air mattresses can get, and the air flow in this mattress is near perfect. This allows every section of this mattress to maintain a consistent and even air pressure, so no part of the mattress feels softer or harder than the other. This air mattress is available in 4 different sizes – Twin XL, Full, Queen, and California King.

Inexpensive air mattresses are often made from thin and cheap layers of vinyl, and are not as well-cushioned or thick as their slightly more expensive counterparts. However, we were pleasantly surprised when we looked at the Serta Raised Air Mattress, since it actually features one of the most comfortable structures out of any air mattress in this price range. In fact, it is almost as comfortable as mattresses that cost twice as much, and that is a feat which most budget air-mattresses can’t hope to accomplish.

The built-in primary pump in this mattress will inflate and deflate the whole thing within 4 minutes, while a secondary pump ensures that your pump never runs low on pressure. This secondary pump is connected to a pressure gauge, and it ramps up the airflow going into the mattress whenever a drop in internal pressure is sensed. The ultra-comfortable flocked top prevents your sheets from sliding around, and delivers a great sleeping experience which is quite similar to that of a conventional bed mattress. This air mattress is available in 2 sizes – Queen and Twin. The Queen size comes with three different top finishes – plain, pillow top, and blue.

Insta-Bed Ez Bed Queen Air Mattress

This is definitely one of the more unique air mattresses that we’ve encountered. It consists of two parts – an inflatable body, and a supporting frame. The frame can collapse into itself, and is mounted onto the walls of a specialized duffle bag. When you remove the frame and unfold it into the bed mode, the duffle bag will come apart and spread open to let the frame expand outwards. Then, you can use the primary internal pump to inflate or deflate the entire mattress within a matter of minutes.

There is also a secondary pump which has been synced to a pressure sensor that constantly monitors the pressure levels inside the mattress. Whenever the pressure levels go below a certain limit, this secondary pump kicks in, instantly restoring optimal pressure to the mattress. The self-deploying design is actually quite easy to set up. All you have to do is unfold the carry case, plug the pump into any wall socket, wait for 4 minutes, and voila! You have a bed that is fully prepared to support the weight of multiple adults simultaneously without showing any signs of straining or flexing, thanks to the metal frame that supports this mattress from underneath.

The topper is double flocked, and does not feel slippery or rubbery at all. This top is quite similar to that of a conventional mattress, and it actually feels pretty soft. You could even make the flocked top harder if you wanted, since the built-in pump on this mattress allows you to select from three different pressure settings – plush, medium, and firm. It is this incredible versatility and ease of use that prompted us to include this wonderful mattress on our top pick list.

Innomax Queen Adjustable Air Mattress with Dual Remotes

INNOMAX Queen Size Medallion Adjustable Sleep AIR Bed Mattress. Includes Dual Remotes with 50...
View on Amazon

Despite costing twice as much as an average 7.1 channel home theater system, this air mattress really impressed us with its ultra-durable design and superb comfort. It is available in 4 sizes – Twin XL, Queen, King, and California King. The Medallion boasts an impressive 15” height when fully inflated, and that is on par with most king or queen size beds. Even elderly people and those with back or knee problems will have no difficulty in getting on or off this amazing air mattress.

Actually, it would be improper to call this a simple “air mattress”, due to its sheer size, cost, and slew of amazing features. The top of this mattress features an interchangeable memory foam and latex pillow top. You can choose the memory foam if you have neck issues, and if you want a super soft surface with more “give”. Or, you can simply choose the latex top if you want more of a conventional mattress feeling. You can switch between the 4.2-pound memory foam pillow top and Talalay Latex top simply by unzipping a dual-side zipper.

The luxurious mink feel cover makes you feel like you are sleeping on a coat of densely packed fur, and will keep your body warmer during the winter. Truly, this air mattress is built and designed to deliver nothing short of a premium sleeping experience. Everything from the mink-feel top cover to the interchangeable pillow layers makes for a zero-compromises sleeping experience.

In fact, the only reason why we placed this mattress in the “worth considering” category is because it is simply too damn expensive. Not everyone would like to shell out this much dough for an inflatable mattress, and it is not intended for casual usage either. This can act as a replacement bed for your bedroom, or can even be used to transform your living room into a type of secondary bedroom for guests and visitors.

Smaller Air Mattresses for Unexpected Guests

Have you ever been at a crowded family function or other social event, but knew you had to spend the night? Or maybe you were the one hosting your fair share of guests? Whatever the case, one thing must have puzzled you; Bed space. It usually is all fun and games until people start feeling sleepy. When that starts happening, owning an air bed brings a great sense of relief. So, on that note, which is the best twin air bed in the market today?

Serta Raised Twin Air Mattress

Serta Raised Twin Airbed with NeverFlat Pump, Beige (ST840016)
View on Amazon

When it comes to choosing a twin air mattress, this just has to be at the top of your list. The first feature that justifies this claim is the quality of materials that this mattress is made from. Mainly consisting of PVC, this mattress has been proven to be both water and puncture resistant, 2 serious problems that affect most air mattresses. Secondly, this bed comes fitted with two pumps. The 1st (primary) pump automatically carries out the initial inflation or deflation of your bed impressively in just under 4 minutes. The secondary NeverFlat™ pump then silently monitors and maintains the air pressure while you sleep.

How’s this helpful? First of all, you’re saved a lot of time with the quick 4-minute pumping, especially if you’re tired or in a hurry to set up. Secondly, the monitoring of the air pressure ensures you sleep comfortably throughout the night. But that’s not all. The mattress also has an auto-shutoff feature on the primary pump that turns it off when it’s fully inflated or deflated. Since comfort is still the most important priority here, the airbed is fitted with 21 circular coils that create both a supportive and level sleep surface for your utmost comfort. Moreover, the top is also durable and flocked making it not only comfortable, but also convenient when it comes to keeping your sheets in place.

Although the pump can be heard sometimes during inflation and deflation, it generally runs quite smoothly and silently. With a variety of comfort levels to choose from, including; Plush, Medium or even Firm, the Serta Raised Air Mattress rightly deserves to be at the top of our list.

Intex Raised Airbed

Intex Pillow Rest Raised Airbed with Built-in Pillow and Electric Pump, Twin, Bed Height 16.5'
View on Amazon

If you’re working on a budget, this has to be the airbed for you. The first striking feature has to be its sturdy construction. Packed with a double-layered wave beam interior construction, this mattress sits comfortably on the ground even though it sits 16.5 inches high.

Apart from construction, the bed also has a waterproof, flocked top that makes it both durable and comfortable. The in-built pillow rest, which is raised about 18 inches from the floor, makes it even more comfortable for you. The Intex Airbed is also specially fitted with a modern, high-powered pump. When it comes to complete inflation or deflation, you can expect the whole process to be done in approximately 3 minutes. Impressive! That’s not all, though. If, after inflation, the bed feels either too soft or firm, you can easily customize it to your liking with just the touch of a button.

Most uniquely though, is how well this mattress is suited for the road. The Pillow Rest, for instance, comes with both a shoulder strap and duffel bag making it quite easy to move around. One setback with this bed, however, has to be how you have to manually stop it from inflating when it reaches your desired amount of firmness. With both the convenience of a blow-up mattress and the comfort of a bed, however, it would be hard to think of a better pocket-friendly airbed.

Fox Air Inflatable Bed

Best Inflatable Bed by Fox Airbeds - Plush High Rise Air Mattress in King, Queen, Full and Twin...
View on Amazon

A much stronger and more comfortable replacement to its predecessors, this Fox Air Bed shows a lot of promise from every perspective. Its versatility when it comes to inflation and deflation, for starters, has to be the greatest improvement. Its new Air Flow System feature makes it possible for you to inflate with either the built-in or other external pumps. Depending on preference and/or availability, this could surely come in handy.

Secondly, its construction also consists of about 43% thicker vinyl. This makes it much heavier and sturdier than others in its category. Furthermore, the increased vinyl also makes the mattress much more comfortable to lie on when fully inflated. All this goes without mentioning the airbed measures an impressive 80 inches! Technically, when it comes to length, no other twin airbed beats it. This is a very crucial feature to factor-in especially if you’re tall. So, if you’re 5’10” or taller, don’t worry, it would work perfectly for you.

This Inflatable mattress, however, is quite heavy mainly due to its construction. If you’re thinking of moving around with it, it might not be that easy. Sadly also, the pump can be quite loud at times. Other than that, its 4 minute inflation and deflation period is the other welcome feature since the pump is quite powerful and fast. Add that to the fact that the bed fits well with most standard sheets and you’ll definitely have the complete package.

Lazery Sleep Air Mattress

Lazery Sleep Air Mattress Airbed with Built-in Electric 7 Settings Remote LED Pump (Twin)
View on Amazon

Another in our ‘runner-up’ list, the Lazery Air Mattress has been branded as the most advanced air mattress in the current market. How come? To begin with, this mattress is expertly fitted with 21 internal air coils courtesy of ComfortCoil Technology. This improved design greatly boosts both the durability and sturdiness of the airbed. Thanks to it, your bed is sure to remain firmly on the ground while you’re sleeping.

Another design-inspired improvement has to be the extra thick, multi-layered material used in the construction, and also the flocked top. This not only increases your comfort during use, it also makes the bed both waterproof and puncture-resistant. If its durability you’re looking for, you can’t go wrong with this. In a field where size matters, the bed’s 73” × 38” × 18” inch frame surely doesn’t hurt. With a raised dual chamber construction, it sits at a height you’d be comfortable sleeping in. It also has a “Sure-Grip” bottom that prevents it from moving unnecessarily when you’re sleeping.

Last but not least has to be its 1-click internal pump. With a full inflation/deflation time of under 3 minutes, it works easily and fast. To top it all off, the bed comes ready with a carry bag to help you carry it around comfortably. Whether you’re thinking of using it in the house or for some outdoor activity, the possibilities are endless.

Choosing the Best Air Mattress for Long-Term Use

Air mattresses can come in many shapes and sizes, and choosing a particular air mattress out of the many brands and models currently swarming the market can be a very difficult task. Just like regular mattresses, air mattresses are also available in various sizes and thicknesses. Like conventional mattresses, air mattresses are available in twin, full, queen, king, and California king sizes. Before buying an air mattress, you must consider the following things:

Size of Mattress
First, let us start with the aspect of size. Here is a little rundown of each mattress size name, and its respective dimensions:

1. Twin- 38” x 74”

2. Twin XL- 38” x 80”

3. Full- 54” x 74”

4. Queen- 60” x 80”

5. King- 76” x 80”

6. California King- 72” x 84”

The first three mattress sizes should be sufficient for supporting a single adult male or female between 5’ to 5’10”in height. However, if you’re a rather tall person, or if the mattress is intended to be used by more than one person, then consider any of the last three sizes. If you’re a tall person (6 feet), then a single Twin XL should suffice for you.

The good thing about finding a proper sized air mattress is that they follow the same sizing description as a normal mattress. They can sometimes feel smaller, however, depending on the inflation level and firmness. Are two people sleeping on the air mattress or just one? If it’s two, and they are adults, you may want to go up to a queen size air bed. If it’s two kids or one adult, then a twin air bed should do the trick.

The height of the person sleeping on the air mattress is one of the more important factors to consider when choosing the right size. If they are taller than average, you want to make sure that they will be comfortable on the air bed that you choose. You’ll also want to check the weight capacity to ensure their is enough support for their body weight – whether it will be a single person sleeping or two people.

Best Air Mattress for Long-Term Use

Moving on to mattress cushioning – this is a highly subjective matter. Most people who buy air mattresses use them as guest beds, or for transforming the home office/drawing room into a temporary bedroom for visitors and guests. If your guests are a bunch of children aged between 7 to 11 years old, then you probably won’t need a super thick air mattress with double level cushioning.

Remember that air mattresses which inflate into larger, thicker shapes, will also weigh more and take up extra storage space when they are not in use. However, there are quite a few scenarios in which you might need a thicker air mattress. One such example would be when your guests include elderly people. Senior citizens will not like to sleep on a hard surface, and they will have issues with getting up from a lower position, as well as kneeling down really low to sleep on the thinner mattress. People with ankle or knee joint problems will want taller and thicker mattress because those are easier to get on and off. Consider getting a thicker mattress if you intend to use it as a temporary main bed in a place like a bedroom, until you get a real queen size or king size bed.

Surface Material
Some people will manage just fine on the default vinyl surface of an air mattress. However, a lot of people don’t like the feeling since it is pretty similar to sleeping on a giant rubber balloon – the PVC shell of an air mattress just feels slippery, and tends to make weird sounds when your body or your pillow slides on it. In those cases, consider getting an air mattress with a slightly modified top surface such as a cloth or fur finish. You might even want to use a memory foam bed cover on the top to make your sleeping experience more natural and pleasant with an air mattress.

Method of Inflation
External pumping is when you blow air into the mattress via a hand pump or some sort of compact external electric pump. However, some air mattresses come with pumps mounted into the shell itself, and operate much like self-inflatable rafts, except for the fact that the pumps in these mattresses are designed for long term usage and can be operated several times daily, for many months. Some mattresses even come with built in pressure and temperature sensors. During really cold nights, the air contracts in volume and the mattress loses pressure, causing it to sag inwards. As soon as the pressure sensor picks up this change, it will activate the internal air pump to restore optimal pressure.

You can save some cash buy purchasing an air mattress that you can blow up manually, however, we really caution against this. It takes a lot of air and effort to blow up an air mattress and it’s strongly suggested that you purchase one that can automatically inflate and deflate when plugged into an outlet. If you’re camping and obviously without power you’ll probably be looking at one that uses a foot or hand pump.

Best Air Bed for Long-Term

Family or Guests
Let’s face it, if you’re hosting kids or anyone that is happy to not to be on the floor then getting a basic air mattress should suffice. If you’re having your in-laws sleep on it and are worried about impressions, then you definitely want to step it up and get a quality air mattress that will be comfortable and supportive.

Where and how will you be storing the mattress when not in use? Queen air beds look great when they are all pumped up and you’re guests will love you for that, however, even deflated that is a lot of material and packing that size up can be quite the challenge. Just because it comes nicely packaged in the box when first purchased, don’t think that you’ll be able to fold it as perfectly again to fit into it’s original packaging. It’s good to see if the air bed comes with a carrying case or protective cover that allows you to keep it in good shape while packed away.

You can get air beds that are fancy and include LED lights that will provide low light when getting up to the bathroom, etc. There are also air beds that have a USB port so you can charge a cell phone. These are really not necessary features, however, so best to stick to the basics and the most important feature of all – power inflation and deflation. You’ll also want a whisper quiet auto-inflate feature that keeps the air mattress at the proper air level throughout the night so you don’t wake up to a saggy mattress.

How to Choose Sheets for your Air Bed
