The Best Hand Blender for Soup

When you’re pressed for time but still want a delicious and nutritious meal, a quick go-to meal is a hearty bowl of soup. And there’s so many benefits to making your own rather than relying on the pre-packaged kind from the supermarket – not only can you customize it with the flavors and textures that you enjoy, but you can also control the micronutrients in your meal. Canned soup is notorious for excess levels of sodium and low-quality vegetables, so it’s always a healthier option to make your own.

Now you’re probably thinking – “wait, soup takes FOREVER to make! It’s not a quick meal!” There’s one handy gadget that may change your mind… a hand blender! It’s the perfect solution for creating a perfect portion of homemade soup – just put your ingredients into the container and blend until smooth. No need to simmer for hours or plan in advance when you can be enjoying your soup in less than 20 minutes!

The key is to make sure you’ve picked a high quality hand blender – they aren’t all created equal, and certainly not all suited for soup lovers. Below are some reviews of the top rated hand blenders to help you decide which is right for you.

Cuisinart Smart Stick Hand Blender

This hand blender is soup’s best friend and my favorite go-to kitchen gadget. It does everything you want it to without adding lots of extra bells and whistles that will never be used. It features a 200 watt motor with 2 different speeds – the low speed is perfect for making delicious and smooth soup without making the consistency too thin. The scalloped design at the end of the stick allows a good flow of liquid to pass through the blades while still offering protection from the razor-sharp blades. It also comes with a perfectly sized beaker that will fit the blender perfectly, but it is slim enough to be used with most of your existing jugs and bowls.

One of the biggest factors that will make you fall in love with this hand blender is that the shaft is dishwasher safe! With how frequently you can use this hand blender for soups, especially in winter, it’s so frustrating to always be hand washing your kitchen tools when there’s a dishwasher ready to do the job for you.

There’s also a range of fun colors to choose from as well as stocking the standard chrome and while – not a critical feature, but a fire engine red hand blender makes the job a bit more fun!
Overall the Cuisinart Smart Stick is the perfect ‘blend’ (pardon the pun) of functionality, style and value for money.

Ovente Immersion Hand Blender

Ovente Multi-Purpose Immersion Hand Blender Set – 300-Watts, 2-Speed – Stainless Steel...

Many people are pleasantly surprised by the soups you can make in this little powerhouse of a hand blender! It has an impressive 300 watt motor to ensure it has the strength to blend any soup or smoothie you want to make, and has the two speed function as well. It feels very comfortable in your hand with a non-slip texture. What is really impressive is the variety in attachments that you can use – there was an egg whisk which will make your morning omelette much quicker to make! There is a beaker as well, although it may need a bit more width to really work well. The attachments and beaker are dishwasher safe.

There were a few things that let the Ovente Immersion Hand Blender down when compared to the Cuisinart Smart Stick. The main issue was that the stick edge doesn’t seem to get the same liquid flow as the Smart Stick, but only when there were chunkier soups involved. Also the blender just didn’t seem to be made out of high quality materials – it feels ‘cheaper’ than the other models, but that’s to be expected at the price. The beaker also felt a little small compared to some of the attachments! But overall it’s a solid entry-level immersion blender that gets the job done.

You can feel the power of this hand blender the first time you use it – with 350 watts behind it your vegetables don’t stand a chance. It is the only blender on this list with such variable and specific speed controls, because rather than just two settings there is a dial that you slide to increase or decrease speed. It’s handy if you really want to control your blending, and it certainly gives you some flexible options for more than just soup! And if you like frozen berries in your smoothies, the powerful blades slice through icy products with no problem at all.

The different sized blending containers that came with this machine are a great asset. Rather than just a single beaker, there is also a shorter bowl which is perfectly sized for soup – and is also great for chopping up vegetables like onions or garlic. These bowls come with lids, which is fantastic in case you’ve made too much soup and want to store it for later – or you’ve just made it in advance ready to take to work. Of course the stick and all the extras are dishwasher safe for easy cleanup.

This model is a step up in price from the models above, but if you are going to get full use out of the enhanced control features and additional extras, then it would be a worthwhile addition to your kitchen cabinet.

KitchenAid 5-Speed Hand Blender

This is the Rolls Royce of hand blenders! Everything about this device screams quality and durability. It is built with high quality stainless steel with a 350 watt motor and 5 speed settings, and is the only hand blender here with interchangeable BLADES – yes, different blades for different purposes!

Another standout feature was that it came with two blending arms of different lengths – one is 8 inches, the other is 13 inches. This is fantastic for when you want to create larger soup batches and you need a deeper arm. Of course they aren’t the only attachments – it also comes with an egg whisk and a chopper with specific chopping bowl. The 1L blending pitcher means you can blend multiple soup servings at once – great for couples or families, or just freeze the extra portions for another day.

You won’t be surprised to learn that this is the most expensive blender in this list, but it’s easy to see why. It could potentially be a bit over-the-top for simple soup-blending needs. Serious cooks and lovers of top quality products will not be disappointed by this outstanding blender.

Choosing the Best Hand Blender for Soup

So in the end, what’s important to look for when you’re buying a hand blender? First, the wattage of the motor is crucial not just for the speed of blending, but for the longevity of the unit itself. Anything too low will wear the parts out quickly. Look for at least 200 watts.

Blade casing is also important as the blades in these hand blenders are powerful and razor sharp so you need to be protected. But if the cover is too tight or doesn’t have the right design it won’t allow for adequate liquid flow and it will take much longer to blend. The ideal casing gives space around the blades and holes for liquid flow without exposing the blades too much.

In case you didn’t pick it up from the rest of the article, ease of cleaning is important! There’s nothing worse than looking around your kitchen and seeing a pile of gadgets that need hand washing, especially if you are making your soup in the morning and rushing to get to work. The box should clearly say that the attachments are dishwasher safe – otherwise, assume they are not.

Finally, if you are torn between two models than the additional attachments could be what sways you one way or another. Especially for those who love to cook a variety of meals, simple additions like the egg whisk attachment will come in handy and increase the value of your immersion blender because you’re getting more use out of it. Happy blending!
